The
son of an African textile broker, Yinka can spin a yarn about African
fabric. It is all true and authentic, for African culture reveals
itself in its clothing. Ceremonial dress is so important, for instance,
that a Nigerian might personally select the actual cotton balls used
in making the fabric!
Outfits are a laid with meaning as they are
with material. A male's special occasion set may include four to six
garments, such as loose caftan robes, wide-waited trousers and a fila
(cap). The counterpart for women would be long lengths of hand-woven
fabric incorporating metallic threads and wrapped around the body.
On their head they wear intricately twisted and folded turbans. Earth
tones to iridescent and silver threads, African fabrics tell a colorful
story. |
